NTT Docomo to update 18 handsets to ICS

Docomo announced today that it is updating 14 phones and 4 tablets to ICS. The Sony tablets are also being upgraded. Of Docomo tablets, only the LG Optimus Pad is currently slated to stay on Honeycomb. Another 7 handsets are currently under consideration for upgrade (see bottom of quoted text below). Updates are currently scheduled to start from July.

So at least 18, as many as 25 devices getting upgraded from Gingerbread to ICS. Not too bad. Better than Docomo had done in the beginning.

Unsurprisingly, they didn't mention the mobile data management features of ICS in their press release. I bet they want everyone to stay on gingerbread +forever+ and keep paying for background packet data they don't need.

  4. I doubt it since most of those people are on unlimited FOMA contracts. Actually, Docomo has complained that Android uses too much background data and has too frequent keep alives.

  5. I'm a little confused by the announcement. Are they saying they are only upgrading the models currently being sold, or will people who have owned a GALAXY S II SC-02C for a few months now (like me) receive an update?

  6. Whoops... sorry... misread the announcement. I get it now. July is a long way away, though. I'm thinking of rooting my phone, so maybe it's not relevant anyway.

  7. Just out of curiosity (and slightly off topic), does anyone know when the ICS 4.0 update is coming for the jp version of the Asus Transformer? I've been waiting forever!

  10. So apparently updates all didn't roll out in July like initially reported. A few have gotten it and apparently SH-01D is getting an ICS update today. SO late. Anyone here know anything about the ICS update for the T-01D? I'm sending it to Japan to get it unlocked soon and hopefully I could get it updated while it's there as well..
